One must admire the way the French diplomats take advantage of our ineptitude. After we have mismanaged the attempts to induce Iraq to disarm we are left with little choice but to use force. The French share our aims, but propose means they know are useless. Thus we (and the British), are left to use force and suffer the casualties, expense, and condemnation, while the French can pose as friends if the Iraqi people and French companies continue to profit.
The last sentence of your posting explains motives of French authorities. I am sure that Chiraq has the same opinion on Saddam's practices Mr. Bush has. But many French companies enjoy privileges granted to them by Saddam, and no one can know what will be the priorities of the regime that will replace the current dictator. It is more likely to prefer the American companies. Therefore, France makes every effort possible to keep Saddam at power.
