Which of the following sentences is correct?

1) He did a lot of swimming when he was AT college.

2) He did a lot of swimming when he was IN college.

If both are possible, do they mean the same thing?

Also, is it correct to say, "to do a lot of swimming"?

Finally, is it also possible to say, "to do a lot of sport(s)" as in "He did a lot of sport(s) when he was at/in high school"?

Thank you.

Both are correct; (1) is more common in British English; (2) is more common in American English.
