Is there a software program out there which would allow me to turn my computer into a Hard Disk recorder? I would like to program TV shows and record them to my computer hard drive or an external hard drive. Would it be better to just go ahead and get a TiVo or something?

There are several dozen apps that do just that. The easiest is Windows XP Media Center Edition but there is also SageTV and a host of others. If you buy a TV tuner card (which you'll need to create a PC based PVR) it'll come with the software needed.
