I trust you've read The Group?
Osso--
Of course. I'm a graduate of a woman's college--not one of the Seven Sisters, but second tier--and the outrage of men (The First Mr. Noddy, among others) being exposed to the notion that women had pasts and presents and presences...
I still have a battered paperback and even if I can't put my paws on the paperback, I have Ms. MaCarthy's memories interwoven with my memories...
Thanks for the trip.
"Angry Housewives Eating Bonbons" was a decent book in that category -- derivative as all get-out, but diverting.
I just read an xmas gift called "The Stupidest Angel" -- went by in a matter of hours, rather wince-inducing at times, but fun.
Looking at the title of this topic I was expecting someone to mention Danielle Steele, lol. Guilty pleasure here is romance novels. I reald Jean M. Auel's "Clan of the Cave Bear" (highly recommended) and moved on to the next in the series in which the protagonist becomes somewhat of a nympho. Ah, well.
This thread is too long to read in its entirety. I enjoyed Frank Harriss's book mentioned by Cav, and Gone With the Wind. Also Peyton Place and the sequels. Rebecca by Daphne DuMarier.
Aela BECAME A NYMPHO???!!!!!
In the sequel, Valley of Horses, she only sleeps with one man - and at the very end of the book!!! After ever so much weary palaver!!!!
Nympho indeed!
Oh - have I revealed a guilty pleasure???
DAMN!!!!
Lol.
I have NEVER read a Danielle Steele - I did, however, read Peyton Place many years ago,
And The Group - to see what the fuss was about.
Was I rude in not replying to everyone's suggestions for my friend?
Yes.
My apologies and thanks, in any order you would like to receive them.
Joe (No, that is not a copy of The New York Post in my backpack.) Nation
Guilty Pleasure
I don't have any specific guilty pleasures, but one of my favorite authors has a book that is actually titled Guilty Pleasures. Her name is Laurell K. Hamilton and writes Supernatural Fantasy. I've also recently picked up Anne Bishop as another favorite. Garth Nix, Tamora Pierce, Mercedes Lackey and Sherrilyn Kenyon are other good ones, though Sherrily Kenyon is more Supernatural Romance than Supernatural Fantasy.
I have heard that there is a whole new genre of supernatural erotica/porn.
Now - where did I read that?
Reviews at Powells, I think...
Hmmmmmm...
Welcome, Incubusdream - speaking of supernatural erotica, lol!!!!
Actually - it ISN'T new, is it? As your name implies...
Also, books like Bram Stoker's Dracula were quite erotic...
It must be an old genre reborn - or perhaps newly re-noticed???
Ever read any Ann Rice, dlowan?
Philip Jose Farmer, the sf writer, once wrote a book about vampires and such which was so erotic that no "reputable" publisher would touch it. It was finally published by a p-back house that printed nothing put porn for its other titles. The name of Farmer's book now escapes me, but I'm sure I still have it packed in a cradboard box somewhere.
I just came across this thread.
In my late teens/early twentiies, I got into Iceberg Slim, an incarcerated pimp/dope dealer who became a writer while in prison. He wrote several books, "Pimp", "Trick Baby", and he was a pretty good writer, descriptive, thoughtful, funny, very raw. I think he died some years ago.

Maybe "The Image of the Beast"?
Thank you, Francis. Yes, "The Image of the Beast" it is. My memory needs a jump-start from time to time.
I like Farmer very much.
I spoke about him in the "Where am I" thread.
I've read some Farmer, mostly in sf anthologies. I enjoyed "Image of the Beast" but it is way over the top. Some of the symbolism, though, is arresting.
My favorites are :
"Lord Tyger"
"To Your Scattered Bodies Go"
and next
"The Maker of Universes".
I have no guilty pleasure when it comes to reading.
My rule is quite simple...I'll read anything I can get my hands on,even the trashy novels.
I figure that if an author took the time to write the book, then I can at least read it.
Every so often, a body needs a Regency Romance.
