Both are correct.

The 'a' just serves to quantify the extent of the contradiction, so it would depend on what you're trying to convey. You could also say "some contradiction" (rather than "a"), or massive contradiction, or many contradictions, etc.

Read literally, "contradiction" just means speaking in opposition to yourself.
