Hi. I am shopping for a computer that will enable me to transfer my OLD home videos to DVD. I know I need a DVD burner. But I also need something to capture analog (not digital) video. Can anyone help me with any of the following questions?

What is the generic name for the device that captures analog video?
Is it an internal or external device?
Are all such devices compatible with all editing software (e.g. Ulead, Pinnacle, etc) or just some?
What should I expect to pay?
Any recommendations?

Thanks!

A Video Capture Card.

They can be either. There are internal cards and external USB devices.

I honestly don't know. I'd guess that you could finding matching video stream formats but you'd have to tinker and see what you'd come up with. Pinnicale sells a kit (I think it's called "Dazzle" something that has the card and software all in one box.)

Personally, I'd go another route. You can buy a TV Tuner card like the ATI TV Wonder and it comes with video capture software. You'd just turn on your VCR and hook the "TV Out" coax to the Tuner Card and set the tuner to channel 3 or 4 and start recording to the HD. Once you have the file on your HD you can use any of several applications to burn it to DVD as and MPEG-2 or DiVX file which would be playable through most DVD players or PC systems. You can get these TV Tuner cards for under $75.
