Which of the following sentences is correct?

1) Women’s chances to climb the career ladder have always been LESS than men’s.

2) Women’s chances to climb the career ladder have always been FEWER than men’s.

I think it's 2, because the word you use should correspond with chances, which is plural. Use less with non-countable nouns such as significance, importance, and money.

I agree: FEWER. "Fewer chances" since you can conceivably count the number of chances.
