Should I drop out or risk failure?

Hi, so I am an incoming highschool freshmen half way through my Math 1 Summer course, and my question is if my grade is the bare minimum to pass (87%) should I just drop out and not waste my summer, or should I take a chance and keep moving foward. Thanks for the help, im really anxious and afraid of wasting my whole summer just to make my transcript look bad.

@Onetimequestionmaybe,
Or you could get a tutor and study hard and see what happens.

Passing Math 1 should not just be about how it looks on your transcript; it should also be about you learning the material, and it sounds like you aren't.

@jespah,
Thanks for the help, and sorry I sound so obnoxious, but I personally feel as though im trying as hard as I can. Its just that math is one of my worst subjects and no matter how much I understand it, I can't seem to do it very well. Again thanks for the second perspective.

@Onetimequestionmaybe,
Is the course helping you at all? Are you learning from it? If the course isn't what you need, then you might make an argument for dropping out.

What do your parents think about this?

@Onetimequestionmaybe,
I understand your frustration (chemistry was the bane of my existence in high school). Is this course required for you to graduate, go to college, or be considered for a scholarship? Then you're probably going to have to buckle down. At least when I was in high school (when dinosaurs roamed the earth), you couldn't graduate high school without at least two years of math. You just plain would not get a diploma.

@Onetimequestionmaybe,
Have you spoken with your teacher? What does s/he think? Is the teacher willing to give you some extra help?

If the teacher is unwilling to help you then I would say drop out. For the main reason that you are not going to learn it as you should - good teachers are very willing to have students - and often times, the teachers will be more lenient on your grade if you show an honest to goodness effort.

Math is cumulative in learning so it is important to learn the material. It will continue to haunt you gpa-wise if you do not learn the material.

@maxdancona,
Hi, I am understanding from the course so far, but I've been told it only gets more challenging and tedious as i progress. My parents just dont want to see me waste 6 weeks just to have to repeat it during the year. Thanks for the help.

@jespah,
Hi again, I think I may have misinformed you, because what I meant by dropping out of the class was that I'd drop out and take it during the school year (Where most of the freshmen are supposed to be). Thanks again for understanding, especially since atleast 4 years of math is required now.

@Onetimequestionmaybe,
Does your teacher have an opinion on whether you should drop the course or not? Maybe it is because the summer session is condensed in a shorter period of time - that might be a legit reason to drop.

The other side of the coin - if you have difficulty in math and are taking a full schedule during the school year, you will have less time to focus on math - just throwing that out there for you to think about.

I wouldn't say there is a right or wrong answer - just what is right for you.

@Linkat,
My teacher says only if im positive that i wont pass, should I drop out, and being at the lowest passing grade, im unsure if I'll pass in time. My semester final is coming up, and If i dont pass the test, I think I might drop the class. Either way, it's guaranteed that Ill have a math course during the year (whether it may be Math 1 or Math 2). Thanks for the help!

@Onetimequestionmaybe,
Ah, okay, now I understand.

If you do drop this class, it would probably be a good idea for you to do some independent studying. I know it's the summer and you may not want to, but you are going to be right back in this exact same predicament during the school year if nothing changes.

From what I am reading here... I think it is logical for you to stay in the class. Let's look at the pros and cons of you staying in the class.

Pros:

1) If you get a passing grade, you will get credit for the class.
2) You are learning things in the class. You get to keep what you learn whether or not you get a passing grade.
3) This will help you in school math you have to learn anyway. This will make your life easier in high school.
4) You are already half way through the class.

Cons:

1) You have to do work in this class in summer, when you would rather be doing something else.

It seems to me that the pros outweigh the cons.

@Onetimequestionmaybe,
Wow, I didn't believe this kind of matter could be sorted out in about of a day or two, regardlessly, I've officially passed the Fall semester, thanks to a good final's score, extra credit, and you people. With only 10 more days of (suffering) the Spring semester, I've decided to not dropout. This website is great. Live on and wish me luck!
