Help with calculating Permutations

Hi wise mathematicians,

I need some help with calculating the number of possible variations/ permutations of a project that I am working on. I am an experimental film-maker who has made a "Multivariant Movie". This movie runs off a computer and plays through a different variation of the movie everytime that it is watched.

My mathematical abilities are very limited to say the least, I was hoping that some kind and mathematically inclined souls could help me to work out exactly how many permutations/ variations are possible in my movie.

I've included an illustration of the film's structure here. http://www.gentlyfall.com/honours/ScenePermutateCalc.gif

The film has 6 scenes in total, and there are a number of possible alternatives for each particular scene (ie. Variants A to D)

Thanks for your help in advance!

If all alternatives for a given scene are valid at all times (i.e. scene 3C can be preceded by any of the scene 2 alternatives and succeeded by any of the scene 4 alternatives), then all you have to do is multiply the numbers of alternatives. For what you have shown, it would be:
3*3*4*3*4*4=1728

Thanks for the speedy reply Markr! Smile

Yes, the alternatives for a given scene are valid at all times.

Wow 1728 is the magic number. Thanks again for your help.
