Will CD's and DVD's from the UK play on US TV's?

My friend lived in Canada for a time and became fond of several Masterpiece Theatre productions. They are not available through Amazon in the States, but Amazon UK carries them.

I seem to remember that British tapes would not play on American machines--and American tapes would not play on British machines.

Are C.D.'s compatable? DVD's?

Thanks. The modern electronic world is a very complicated place and the guides should help.
