@edgarblythe,
Interesting version of Dylan's song, edgar.
Liam Clancy's version seems so much more gentle & reflective. Quite moving.
But of course, Dylan was much younger & more defiant (I think) when he wrote & first sang it.

@msolga,
I think he was genuinely outraged when he directed this one at some ex-friend, though! Wink

When Positively 4TH Street was released, I bought it in Los Angeles or Long Beach. Due to a misprint, the song on the record turned out to be instead, Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window. What makes it special is, I have never heard that version of Crawl anywhere else. It uses the same band Dylan used on the album Highway 61 Revisited. The record of it that was officially released was recorded with The Band for backup.

@edgarblythe,
You've got a collectors item there, edgar.
It might actually make you rich, if you care to put in on the market! Smile

@edgarblythe,
Odd, but I can't find a Dylan video of Restless Farewell.
So like Parting Glass.

So here are the lyrics:

Restless Farewell

Oh all the money that in my whole life I did spend
Be it mine right or wrongfully
I let it slip gladly past the hands of my friends
To tie up the time most forcefully
But the bottles are done
We’ve killed each one
And the table’s full and overflowed
And the corner sign
Says it’s closing time
So I’ll bid farewell and be down the road

Oh ev’ry girl that ever I’ve touched
I did not do it harmfully
And ev’ry girl that ever I’ve hurt
I did not do it knowin’ly
But to remain as friends
And make amends
You need the time and stay behind
And since my feet are now fast
And point away from the past
I’ll bid farewell and be down the line

Oh ev’ry foe that ever I faced
The cause was there before we came
And ev’ry cause that ever I fought
I fought it full without regret or shame
But the dark does die
As the curtain is drawn and somebody’s eyes
Must meet the dawn
And if I see the day
I’d only have to stay
So I’ll bid farewell in the night and be gone

Oh, ev’ry thought that’s strung a knot in my mind
I might go insane if it couldn’t be sprung
But it’s not to stand naked under unknowin’ eyes
It’s for myself and my friends my stories are sung
But the time ain’t tall, yet on time you depend
And no word is possessed by no special friend
And though the line is cut
It ain’t quite the end
I’ll just bid farewell till we meet again

Oh a false clock tries to tick out my time
To disgrace, distract, and bother me
And the dirt of gossip blows into my face
And the dust of rumors covers me
But if the arrow is straight
And the point is slick
It can pierce through dust no matter how thick
So I’ll make my stand
And remain as I am
And bid farewell and not give a damn

They took most of Dylan's better recordings off of youtube.

@edgarblythe,
I've definitely noticed that, edgar!
Rather silly & short-sighted, because youtube could have brought him fresh new fans (& $$$ for his recording company.)

The language is rough. Sorry.

"The Proud" by Talib Kweli

The proud
Stand tall or don't stand at all, c'mon
Uhh, yeah
Break it down
What we do?

[Chorus]
We survive, it's more than pride
We stay alive, ready to ride

One two, one two yo
Aight.. put it down yo
June 21, 2001
Timothy McVeigh is executed
And the country breathe a sigh of relief
Goodness prevails over evil, it seems
Somehow when he's gone, we feel safer
Little do we know

Today the paper say Timothy McVeigh's in hell
So everything's okay and all must be well
I remember Oklahoma when they put out the blaze
And put Islamic terrorist bombing, on the front page
It's like saying only gays get AIDS, propaganda
Like saying the problem's over when they locked that man up
Wrong! It's just the beginning, the first inning
Battle for America's soul, the devil's winning
The President is Bush, the Vice President's a Dick
So a whole lot of fuckin is what we gon' get
They don't wanna raise the babies so the election is fixed
That's why we don't be fuckin with politics
They bet on that, parents fought and got wet for that
Hosed down, bit by dogs, and got blacks into house arrest for that
It's all good except for that - we still poor
Money, power and respect is what we kill for, for real

[Chorus]

August 4, 2001
A drunken police officer mows down an entire family in Brooklyn
The judge lets him go with no bail
It reminds us, of just how worthless our lives are to the justice system
I struggle, to explain the situation to my son, it's hard

**** with knowledge is more dangerous than than **** with guns
They make the guns easy to get and try to keep **** dumb
Target the gangs and graffiti with the Prop 21
I already know the deal but what the **** do I tell my son?
I want him livin right, livin good, respect the rules
He's five years old and he still thinkin cops is cool
How do I break the news that when he gets some size
He'll be percieved as a threat or see the fear in they eyes
It's in they job description to terminate the threat
So 41 shots to the body is what he can expect
The precedent is set, don't matter if he follow the law
I know I'll give my son pride and make him swallow it all (damn!)
**** the pigs! I think the pigs killed Big and 'Pac too
If they didn't they know who did, they got to!
Who they serve and protect, **** not you
Cops shot off of ten G's but they got glocks too
Let you protect yourself, or better yet respect yourself
Straight into the hospital is where you gotta check yourself
They be gettin tips from snitches and rival crews
Doin them favors so they workin for the drug dealers too
Just business enforcers with hate in they holsters
Shoot you in the back, won't face you like a soldier
Kurt Loder asked me what I say to a dead cop's wife
Cops kill my people everyday, that's life

[Chorus]

September 11, 2001
Terrorists attack the Pentagon and the World Trade Center
Kills thousand and permanently scars America's false sense of security
We see the best examples of humanity in the face of the worst
As fire fighters, police officers, rescue workers
and volunteers of all sorts, fight to save lives
The world will never be the same again

My heart go out to everybody at Ground Zero
Red, black, yellow, white and brown heroes
It's more complicated than black and white
To give your own life is the greatest sacrifice
But it's hard for me to walk down the block
Seeing rats and roaches, crack viles and 40 ounce posters
People broken down from years of oppression
Become patriots when they way of life is threatened
It's a hard conversation to have
We lost kids, moms and dads, people ready to fight for the flag
Damn, when did **** get this bad?
America kill the innocent too, the cycle of violence is sad
Damn! Welcome to the world, we here
We've been at, war for years but it's much more clear (yeah)
We got to face what lies ahead
Fight for our truth and freedom and, ride for the dead

[Chorus]

When I think of how things are
right now it feels like
yeah it all feels like some kind of circus show
and how this town it keeps you pinned down
it's the same old song from years ago

and I know this place will chew you up then spit you out
before you go
and when they drag you
kicking and screaming from the scene you know
that it's time to leave

when I think about this town right now
it's filled with speed freaks and assholes
and all kinds of creeps
and somehow every new face in every single case
in a year or two will be erased

and I know this place will chew you up then spit you out
before you go
and when they drag you
kicking and screaming from the scene you know
that it's time to leave

when I think of how I'm feeling right now somehow
I still remember how I felt 4 years ago
and when I think of how things are right now
it's the same old song from years ago

and I know this place will chew you up and spit you out
before you go (I know, I know)
and when they drag you
kicking and screaming from the scene you know
that it's time to go (that it's time to go)
