BANGKOK, Thailand - Marigold garlands might not appear to rank among dangers faced by politicians during the run-up to next year's general elections in Thailand. But one doctor says the flowers, sprayed with a preservative, can pose a serious health risk.
Dr. Sanit Acheepsuntorn, a provincial hospital director, says politicians who traditionally adorn themselves with garlands during election rallies could be in danger of respiratory problems, according to a report by the official Thai News Agency Monday.
The problem lies with formalin, the chemical used to preserve corpses, which is sprayed on marigolds to boost their shelf life.
Sanit says the health risk is particularly acute for politicians who already suffer from conditions such as asthma.
Thailand's elections are scheduled for February.
