Wedding sing-a-long without religious reference?

Reply Mon 1 Nov, 2004 07:04 am
One of my friends has asked me if I can think of any songs which can be sung by the congregation at a civil wedding. Apparently, there can be no religious reference while the registrar is present.

This creates an interesting problem - what songs can you suggest that are:

a) Widely known (mainly UK and German crowd)
b) Non religious
c) Not nationalistic (they don't want "Rule Britannia" at their wedding!)
d) Easy enough for mass voices to deal with

The Beatles songs are probably widely known but could be inappropriate: "Yellow Submarine" or very difficult to sing "Here, There and Everywhere".

Your suggestions would be appreciated.

BECAUSE OF YOU (Tony Bennett)

Because of you there's a song in my heart
Because of you my romance had its start
Because of you the sun will shine
The moon and stars will say you're mine
Forever and never to part

I only live for your love and your kiss
It's paradise to be near you like this
Because of you my life is now worthwhile
And I can smile
Because of you

------ instrumental break ------

I only live for your love and your kiss
It's paradise to be near you like this
Because of you my life is now worthwhile
And I can smile
Because of you

I'll be loving you always
With a love that's true always.
When the things you've planned
Need a helping hand,
I will understand always.

Always.

Days may not be fair always,
That's when I'll be there always.
Not for just an hour,
Not for just a day,
Not for just a year,
But always.

I'll be loving you, oh always
With a love that's true always.
When the things you've planned
Need a helping hand,
I will understand always.

Always.

Days may not be fair always,
That's when I'll be there always.
Not for just an hour,
Not for just a day,
Not for just a year,
But always.

Not for just an hour,
Not for just a day,
Not for just a year,
But always.

Freude schöner Götterfunken - Joy, beautiful spark of the gods, text should be known by the Germans (and perhaps by the British), otherwise here or here

Great suggestions, folks.

Walter - would that be Beethoven/Schiller, by any chance? Ode zur Freude? The EU anthem? Good idea...one of the all time great pieces of music & text.

Sinatra has some good stuff,

Love and Marriage (if you can get past the "Married with Children" reference)
I've Got a Crush on You
I Married an Angel (might just be good for the band or DJ to play)
Fly Me to the Moon
My Funny Valentine
Only Forever
Our Love is Here to Stay (my parents' wedding song!)
Someone to Watch Over Me
Till There Was You
(We've Got a) Sure Thing
You are the Sunshine of My Life (yes, it's a Stevie Wonder cover)

When I Fall In Love is my fave

When I fall in love it will be forever
Or I'll never fall in love
In a restless world like this is
Love is ended before it's begun
And too many moonlight kisses
Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun

When I give my heart it will be completely
Or I'll never give my heart
And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too
Is when I fall in love with you.

And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too
Is when I fall in love with you.

This one was made popular by the Beatles:

'Til There Was You

There were bells on a hill
But I never heard them ringing
No I never heard them at all
'Til there was you
There were birds in the sky
But I never saw them winging
No I never saw them at all
'Til there was you
Then there was music and wonderful roses
They tell me in sweet fragrant meadows of dawn and you
There was love all around
But I never heard it singing
No I never heard it at all
'Til there was you
Then there was music and wonderful roses
They tell me in sweet fragrant meadows of dawn and you
There was love all around
But I never heard it singing
No I never heard it at all
'Til there was you
'Til there was you

There is one by Paul Stookey of Peter Paul and Mary

"There is Love"
Its not quite non religious, although the reference is fleeting. Its mostly about the vows. maybe someone can find it

From this moment life has begun
From this moment you are the one
Right beside you is where I belong
From this moment on

From this moment I have been blessed
I live only for your happiness
And for your love I'd give my last breath
From this moment on

I give my hand to you with all my heart
Can't wait to live my life with you, can't wait to start
You and I will never be apart
My dreams came true because of you

From this moment as long as I live
I will love you, I promise you this
There is nothing I wouldn't give
From this moment on

From this moment as long as I live
I will love you, I promise you this
There is nothing I wouldn't give
From this moment
I will love you as long as I live

From this moment on.

Lovely song FY, and fitting too.

I've played this Paul Stookey song at many a wedding:

There Is Love

He is now to be among you at the calling of your hearts
Rest assured this troubador is acting on his part.
The union of your spirits, here, has caused him to remain
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in his name
There is love. there is love.

A man shall leave his mother and a woman leave her home
And they shall travel on to where the two shall be as one.
As it was in the beginning is now and til the end
Woman draws her life from man and gives it back again.
And there is love. there is love.

Well then what's to be the reason for becoming man and wife?
Is it love that brings you here or love that brings you life?
And if loving is the answer, then who's the giving for?
Do you believe in something that you've never seen before?
Oh there's love, there is love.

Oh the marriage of your spirits here has caused him to remain
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in his name

(um ... sorry, but I see more than a 'fleeting' reference to religion in there ... but, hey, that's just me)

Yes, it is, isn't it? Have you heard it? It became quite the rage during the 1990's.

I'm very familiar with Shania.
And I agree that Stookey's song has reference to a deity...in fact some of its views on marriage are downright creepy.

It's hard to go wrong with "Annie's Song" by John Denver. BTW, the Beatles didn't have to popularize "'Til There Was You". Dinah Washington beat them to it, as I recall.

guess what I'm gonna suggest, KP. <smile>

Artist Frank Sinatra
Title A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square

That certain night, the night we met
There was magic abroad in the air
There were angels dining at the Ritz
And a nightingale sang in Berkley Square

I may be right, I may be wrong
But I'm perfectly willing to swear
That when you turned and smiled at me
A nightingale sang in Berkley Square

The moon that lingered over London town
Poor puzzled moon, he wore a frown
How could he know we two were so in love?
The whole darn world seemed upside down

The streets of town were paved with stars
It was such a romantic affair
And, as we kissed and said goodnight,
A nightingale sang in Berkley Square

The streets of town were paved with stars
It was such a romantic affair
And, as we kissed and said goodnight,
A nightingale sang in Berkley Square

I know 'cause I was there
That night in Berkley Square

NOTE: Berkley is pronounced as "Barkley."

Panz, When I Fall in Love was also done by Jeri Southern and the flip side was "You'd Better Go Now"

Don't stop me, now. I'm on a roll:

Green/Styne

Verse:

It's not that you're fairer
Than a lot of girls just as pleasin'
That I doff my hat
As a worshipper at your shrine
It's not that you're rarer
Than asparagus out of season
No, my darling, this is the reason
Why you've got to be mine

Chorus:

You'd be so nice to come to
You'd be so nice by the fire
While the breeze on high, sang a lullaby
You'd be all that I could desire

Under stars chilled by the winter
Under an August moon burning above
You'd be so nice
You'd be paradise, to come home to and love.

wow! The chord changes on that are beautiful.
