Witches of Pendle

In Lancashire where I was born lies Pendle hill, it was in this area that the quaker movement began, but also where the superstitious used to burn innocent people at the stake in the belief that they were witches.

Life in 1612 must have been a scary one when if you were accused of being a witch by someone who simply didn't like you could well result in death.

Tonight (31st Oct) people still make the pilgramage to the top of this hill, very few know why they do it, they just do.

Yes, he hunts around at night upon the glen and manipulates their teeny legs to make beautiful music...

I went to a folk song club once and there was this guy, good he was, who sang a song about Pendle Hill:

"Oh, Pendle, oh Pendle, thou standest alone,
...........................by Nelson and Colne,..."

I can't remember the rest of the song.

But I remember I liked it.

p.s., here 'tis, courtesy of BBC search engine

I was once enchanted by a witch who lured me to the top of Pendle Hill where I was ordered to exercise her deamons.

Its true-honest.

And the red rose signifies something, Don 1? Tell tell!

The house we moved in
The house we grooved in
The way we waltzed across those marble floors
You used to look deluxe
In your white tie an' tux
Up in that big white house
That is no longer yours

Don Juan, your money's gone
And when your money's gone, Don
Your baby's gone
Don Juan, your baby's gone
Stiff upper lip now, Don
You have to carry on

The red rose is the emblem of the House of Lancaster, and of the county bearing that name, Lancashire. Similarly Yorkshire has the white rose.

Heraldry. Don'cha love it? Richard of York gave battle in vain. That's a mnemonic for the colours of the visible light spectrum. I can't think of any other facts this Saturday morning before I have my morning croissant, and that will involve a trip to Tesco's. Richard had servants to bring his, I'll bet.

King Richard had not only servants to serve, but a taster to taste.
