A German milk farmer takes part in a protest in front of Berlin's Brandenburg Gate. Some 500 farmers from Hessen and Brandenburg demonstrated with their cows against the falling price of milk and the closing down of milk farms.
BERLIN (AFP) - German farmers turned the pedestrian area around the capital's main landmark, the Brandenburg Gate, into a cow field to protest against EU agriculture policy.
Around 500 farmers from the central state of Hesse, some with their cattle, marched through the central monument to protest against milk prices, which the president of the Hesse farmers' association, Heinz Christian Baer, said were currently at the levels of the 1970s.
The dairy farmers said their livelihood was threatened and they called for a reduction in EU milk quotas
