Three public facilities where mothers can leave unwanted newborns without identifying themselves will open in Slovakia in an effort to reduce the number of infants abandoned in trash bins or on the streets.

Incubators designed to keep infants warm will be placed in the capital, Bratislava, and two other cities, said Anna Ghannamova, of the civic group Chance for Unwanted. They will be located near hospitals to ensure newborns who need medical attention can get it quickly.

The project is sponsored by the weekly Slovenka magazine, where Ghannamova serves as editor.

There are similar facilities in the US, in Indiana and Kentucky.

Baby Safe Haven

Needless to say, it's pretty controversial here.

At least one? I'm pretty sure it's available and legal at any hospital in California, even firehouses. Most states have at least one program in effect.

It appears that, judging from what I precieve as sarcasm in your statement, dag, panzade is agreeing with you.

This was very controversial a few years back. Some wanted to be able to charge the mother with abandonment, if I remember the reasoning correctly.

I wasn't aware any programs here had ever developed. Much better than trash cans.
