He was one of the most innovative musicians in the late 50's. He made Rock and Roll fun, energetic and totally danceable. You couldn't hear the opening notes without heading for the floor. What a talent, he will be sorely missed.

Chuck was one of the best writer-singers of all. I made it a point to own a collection of his original best works.

@glitterbag,
Mixed feelings, he was a talented musician but he also liked filming women on the bog without their knowledge.

@izzythepush,
I have mixed feelings also. Some persons skate on their bad performance as a human and some have to pay. Chuck is one who pays. I could if I tried come up with a list of others just as ugly that are revered, flaws overlooked.

What's so bad about that? He found swampland shots inspiring. Probably growing up on the bayou did that for him.

You have to shudder at where music would be without Chuck Berry. He gave popular music a shot of adrenaline that we still haven't gotten over.

He didn't just make rock and roll fun. He was one of a small number of people who invented rock and roll. One of the greats has died this day.

@Blickers,
This is what I meant, sorry if my vernacular is a bit confusing.

At least he didn't get away with it like some. Not taking anything away from his huge contribution to music, but warts 'n all is better than sanitised selective memory.

May he R.I.P.

He was one of the creative greats who put all the pieces together to give Rock it's identity, exciting energy and backbone. He was a bad boy and when he got caught, served his time. This doesn't diminish what he contributed to popular music and our culture.

Chuck didn't "contribute to" rock and roll.

He WAS rock and roll. He invented it. Just ask guys like Keith Richards, eh?

Or, as John Lennon said: "If you ever wanted to give rock and roll another name, it would be "Chuck Berry."

Chuck' tunes will still be covered a hundred years from now, world-wide.

Here's a contemporary Swedish band, faithfully covering one of Chuck's tunes from 60 years ago, "Let it Rock."

NASA sent Chuck's tune "Jonny B. Goode" into outer space, on the voyager, or whatever it was called--the rocket intended to leave the solar system and cruise through space until it was discovered by intelligent life elsewhere in the universe.

Obviously, any creature with intelligence would love Chuck Berry, ya know?

@djjd62,
who's Marvin Berry? Is it possible that you may have meant Marion Barry, former Mayor of Wash DC?

Or is this a reference to the movie "Back To the Future" and Chuck Berry's cousin Marvin?

Chuck was just "high-spirited," eh?

Quote:
His troubles with the law began, in 1944, when a joy riding trip to Kansas City turned into a crime spree involving armed robberies and car theft. Berry served three years of a 10-year sentence at a reformatory.

His career nearly ended decades earlier, when he was indicted for violating the Mann Act, which barred transportation of a minor across state lines for "immoral purposes." A trial in 1961 led to his serving 1 1/2 years of a three-year term.

Tax charges came in 1979, and another three-year prison sentence, all but 120 days of which was suspended.

Some former female employees later sued him for allegedly videotaping them in the bathroom of his restaurant. The cases were settled in 1994, after Berry paid $1.3 million.

"Every 15 years, in fact, it seems I make a big mistake," Berry acknowledged in his memoir.

We all make some mistakes, ya know? But it aint just anybody who creates rock and roll.
