VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - England's World Cup winning rugby stars have attained even more hallowed ground meeting and receiving a blessing from Pope John Paul II.
Lawrence Dallaglio, Mike Catt and John Lewsey, who are already treated as saints at home for their World Cup win in November last year, met the pontiff at his weekly audience on Wednesday.
Jonny Wilkinson, who replaced Dallaglio as England captain, was not on the visit to the pope. Wilkinson's drop goal one minute from the end of extra time in the World Cup final gave England a dramatic 20-17 victory over Australia last November.
The team entered sporting legend as the first England team to win a major team trophy since the 1966 football World Cup.
