When bell-ringers alter the position of a bell in successive changes so as to shift it by degrees from the first to last it is known as "hunting up" and when it is done in the opposite direction it is called "hunting down".
The whole thing is often known as "ringing the changes".
Some corrupted minds may suspect a sexual connotation but I am not one of their number.
Now that you know you might, with practice, be able to appreciate the skill the next time you hear the church bells calling decent folk to their praying and singing and if you happen to be in the company of some ignorant people you can show off your new-found knowledge and also you might have hopefully learned that to question a "spendi" can often backfire.
