Cheeky boy: Roger survived thanks to oxygen mask

Who's a lucky boy then?

Firefighters swooped to save the life of a poorly pet parrot when it was overcome by smoke from a kitchen fire.

They used an oxygen mask to revive Roger as he struggled to breathe after his absent-minded owner fell asleep with a frying pan of sausages cooking.

Owner Patrick Cairns, of Edinburgh, said: "The next thing I ken, there was a fire and the smoke alarm was going off.

"I went down the stairs and then realised about the parrot and thought: `S***!'

"I went back upstairs and a fireman lifted up his cage cover but he was not on his perch.

"He was on the bottom of the cage gasping for breath.

"I felt really guilty when I saw the state the bird was in because I had done something stupid.

A Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade spokeswoman said: "It's very rare for an animal to receive oxygen from firefighters.

"I've certainly never heard of a parrot getting it, he's a very lucky boy."
