A study of headlice show they originated about 1.8 million years ago,about the time HOMO ERECTUS appeared on the scene,and they evolved along with the human race.

They are 2 distinct genetic lines of Pediculus humanus,one is found only in the Americas,which they think probably evolved on an earlier extinct human species.
