The new rocket is intended to familiarize people with space research.

TOKYO, Japan (AP) -- A Japanese university has developed a small rocket targeting hobbyists that will sell for 2.1 million yen (US$19,000) when it soars onto the market this month.

The Camui-50P rocket was developed by a team from Hokkaido University and can fly as high as one kilometer (0.6 mile) within three seconds after take off, according to the Hokkaido Aerospace Science and Technology Incubation Center (HASTIC).

Measuring 1.6 meters (5.25 feet) long and weighing 10.5 kilograms (23 pounds), the rocket has a cavity that can carry a small payload, such as a camera, weighing up to half a kilogram (1.1 pound), it said.

"(The rocket's) commercialization will have the effect of familiarizing people with space research," said HASTIC, which is selling the product.

While it is expected to attract researchers and others, HASTIC said it believes the rocket will "create a new genre of luxury hobbies."

The Camui-50P is hybrid-type rocket that runs on liquid oxygen and acrylic, and is reusable.

HASTIC will require buyers to go through two days of safety instruction in order to purchase the rocket, it said.

Perhaps this is more an insight into my state of mind than anything else, but how easily could this rocket be converted into an anti-aircraft missile?

i wouldnt know..but you can buy SAM-7's very cheaply in russia/far east... they are a few hundred dollars
so $19,000 dollars is a bit pricey for such a purpose
but if you had a spare kilo of plutonium maybe you could have some fun....

man some guy from new zealand last year built a cruise missile for less than 5k and posted how to do it on the net..
its real easy
all you need it a gps, hand held pc for programming target details, metal for tube and fins, engine, propellant, explosive and a launching system and your off....
you can buy most of the stuff from your local hardware store...
especially with all the modern interest in home made rockets...
good news for terrorists everywhere!!!

I would suspect the $19,000 is the price of reliability. I used to be involved in home made rocket (kits) when I was a teenager. It was a lot of fun. I suspect it still is for grown up kids that can afford it.

By the time I save up the price of their ticket, you will probably be able to go standby on a scheduled flight.
