Let's say that I have explained the meaning of "benefactor" to students using definition.
That is, a benefactor is a person who gives financial helpt ot people or institutions.

What kind of question I can ask to check their understaning of the word?

@Nat093,
For example, Can I ask them: What benefactors do you know in your life or in the world?

@Nat093,
That question would get you a list of names - which doesn't tell you anything about their understanding .

Ask them to identify x number of benefactors and to explain what they did to be called a benefactor.

@Nat093,
Please identify three people or organizations you would describe as benefactors. What did each do to be called a benefactor?

@Nat093,
Keep in mind that benefactors may assist by means other than financial. They may provide advice/free services etc.

@ehBeth,
I will ask you just one more question.
Since definiiton is very important here, would it be better to say:
1. A benefactor is a person who gives money or other help to people or institutions.
or
2. A benefactor is a person who gives some form of help to people or institutions.

@Nat093,
I think the first option is better as it is more obvious to most people.
