The "art of whistling" (in German "Kustpfeifen"*) was extremely popular especially in Austria ("Schrammelmusik") in the 19th and earlier 20th century.
Officially, whistling is a 'subdivision' of the flute - one of the last famous professionals is >Hans Hofmann<.

* The term 'Kunstpfeifer' is known in German since the 16th century, a literal translation of the Latin tibicen artifex.

@ehBeth,
I whistle. I whistle songs that come to mind. I whistle to let non-English speaking people on the sidewalk that are clustering, and ambling along slowly, that someone wants to pass. Occasionally, I whistle something from my kindergarten days to get someone to let me pass, such as the Farmer In the Dell, or, London Bridges Falling Down. I also like Friar Jacques.

It seems to annoy people, so I must be getting better.

I never smoked; had asthmatic bronchitis growing up; it would be very bad for me to smoke. Plus, the years when peers were smoking, I was in the military during the Vietnam Era, and it was punishable by years in Leavenworth according to the enlisted popular beliefs (at least in the branch/function I was). Sorry, I'm just a nerdy Jew. I wouldn't have minded being a nerdy WASP. Preferably Methodist.

Are your posts to me supposed to be witty? I can't tell, since I guess my experience in the military left me with the impression that it is the rare Southerner that is not alienated from Northerners (aka, Yankees), and really cannot relate to anyone Jewish, even though the Confederate Secretary of War was Judah P. Benjamin. The media portrayal of ALL Jews being bleeding heart liberals seems to be the image in the country. But, who am I to proselytize. Not I.

Notice that I have no posting "signature" now. It seems to have attracted gratuitous comments that had no logical reason to post, in my opinion. Not wanting to attract off-topic posters, I erased my "signature," rather then have people use it for a reason to comment off-topic to me.
