Using components determine the sum of a + b if a = 3 m [N 30° W] and b = 2 m [N 10° E].

Solution must make use of vector components.

@Veff248,
If I read this correctly, then ...

a = 3 cos 30 North + 3 sin 30 West
b = 2 cos 10 North + 2 sin 10 East

East = - West so...

a = 3 cos 30 North + 3 sin 30 West
b = 2 cos 10 North - 2 sin 10 West

Add those together and you have your answer.

4.57 North + 1.15 West

If you want to turn this back into a vector, the angle is arctan(1.15/4.57) = 14.1 degrees, so 4.57 m [N 14.1° W]
