MILAN (Reuters) - Turning off the television and tuning into a more active lifestyle will boost life expectancy, Italy's Health Minister Girolamo Sirchia has said.

"Abolish the television and you will have a longer and healthier life," he was quoted on Monday by Ansa news agency as telling a conference of elderly people in Milan.

"Don't give in to the couch-potato life of television because it's unhealthy," he added.

It's not the first time Sirchia has come out with unconventional advice for the elderly. At the start of the summer he raised eyebrows when he suggested pensioners head to supermarkets to escape the heat.

ahh but one at least interacts with a puter.
that's mental activity.
okay there isn't any exercise involved.
But wait, I have it! With all the typing and mouse action there is more exercise than just lazing around watching tv.
whew, i can wait till I'm elderly after all.
thought I was going to have to go outside there!
what a relief.

That's so true msolga. When you combine work and pleasure, I spend at least 7 hours each day on the computer. The only time I really watch TV is when I ride my stationery bicycle.

I do walk at least 3 times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes each time. This is my favorite time of year to walk too...I love the crisp fall air and I can't wait for the leaves to begin to change color.
