A prank by two men sparked an international rescue mission when they took a boat which later ran out of fuel - stranding them at sea.

The pair, aged 24 and 29, from Whitstable in Kent, were airlifted from busy shipping lanes 24 miles east of Ramsgate off the North Kent coast by the Belgian coastguard after being spotted by a merchant vessel.

They were taken to Dover where they were arrested and detained at Canterbury Police Station on suspicion of theft of the 20ft sailing yacht.
