Joni has written some good songs herself, but I have to listen to somebody else sing them.

That's pretty common. I feel the same way about Bobby.

@edgarblythe,
Oh, how the mighty have fallen! Seriously! Isn't this folk music we're talking about here? It's built on the borrowing of music and lyrics of generations of musicians and other 'folk'. Now if someone steals a song and the melody with giving no credit, that's a different story. The Hootie scenario wasn't cool, I felt.

Such spurious comments like that which could be taken out of context make me chuckle. I need to listen to this interview as I respect Jian Ghomeshi journalism a lot. Who knows what's behind such commentary? However, I'd not be shocked if he (Bob D.) 'borrowed' some material as it happens all the time. IMHO, the problem would be as to what degree and how impactful this is. If it put the artist who had been obscure on the map, I'd

No doubt he borrowed from thousands of sources. But using that to dismiss what the man accomplished is silly.

@edgarblythe,
And who said these people weren't silly or petty a times? When Joni talks about her work I listen closely. Who knows what grudge or at best lack of objectivity she has about others.

I've been a fan and a follower of Dylan since about '63-'65 and I enjoy most of his music (not so much since '80-something). However, I think he's led us down many a dark alley - especially with his interviews.

@Ragman,
Dylan has often lead us astray in interviews. I don't always read them anymore. I became a Dylan fan about when you did. He has done many things in his career that I did not go along with, but his best songs and recordings will always be among my top favorites of all time. But I too cannot abide his present singing. I rarely listen to his new albums and don't always buy them now.

If I remember correctly there was some stuff in Larry Sloman's book about the Rolling Thunder tour which had Joni as a bit of a nuisance.

@Ragman,
After I saw him bullying Donovan in Pennebaker's Don't Look Back I decided he was a prick. A talented prick nonetheless.

I saw the movie and I don't think Donovan took offense. In a later song he wrote about Bobby Dylan held a broken hour glass in his hand.

@edgarblythe,
When he showed Donovan how a proper song sounds and how it should be played he was trying to teach him something.

@edgarblythe,
He's doing another version of Tangled Up In Blue. I've not heard it yet. The second version was a big leap from the first. Which is probably the reason he dropped it after 1984.

The song is reputed to be the all time No 1 with the serious Bobcats.

@spendius,
I like the song in the original album version best. I doubt he can improve on it much.

That whole album(Blood on the Tracks) is a favorite of mine - and Tangled Up In Blue is definitely way up there - but I love just about everything he does...here's one of my favorites from Bob's middle/later era: he cracks me up in this:

@edgarblythe,
The 1984 TUIB No 2 was greatly superior to No1. More daring. More poetic. I have a video of the performance of it at Newcastle. On the same tape there are other wonders. Simple Twist of Fate and I and I in particular.

@aidan,
Things sure have changed Reb. A new survey shows that women in the UK have had, on average, eight different sexual partners.

When I wor a lad it was a mighty task to get them to have one.

@spendius,
I have a second version of Tangled Up in Blue, with the newer version of lyrics. I still prefer the first.

@spendius,
Wow! Really?! I didn't know that.
But to get back to Bob and his music - I love Simple Twist of Fate, If You See Her Say Hello, She's a Big Girl Now, You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go, Buckets of Rain, and perhaps my favorite (musically - if not lyrically)- Meet me in the Morning. That album is just a classic, or to take it a step further - a masterpiece.
That little break in his voice when he sings 'If you see her say hello' kills me every time.

@aidan,
I agree with you, Aidan. It's one of my favorite albums, one I play while driving now and then.
