A football club mascot made an impassioned appeal to thieves who stole the head of his beloved deer costume to return it so he can compete in the key event of his charity calendar.

Leslie Dean - alias Benny The Buck - said he was growing increasingly anxious that without the full costume he would be unable to compete in this year''s Mascot Grand National.

He urged anyone with information about the official AFC Telford United mascot's head to contact police and allow him to resume his charity work.

Benny's head was stolen from the Collingham FC ground, near Newark, Nottinghamshire, earlier this month during an annual memorial cup match featuring an Emmerdale All Stars XI.

Mr Dean said he had not heard from police and had resorted to making a temporary head out of a cardboard box with two bananas for antlers.
