RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) - Two Brazilian car thieves started their life behind bars while still on the run when they chose a Zoo cage in Rio de Janeiro to hide from police, officials said.
A zoo keeper told Reuters on Monday that one of the criminals had expelled a deer from its cove to hide there when police chased the pair into the Zoo on Sunday. They found the couple hiding in a fenced area where deer and tapirs live.
"Apparently police thought that the bandits were going to take the animals hostage, but, thank God, that did not happen. They just wanted to hide," the keeper said.
One of the criminals who had abandoned a stolen vehicle before jumping the Zoo wall had a pistol, police said.
