Geometric Patterns
May I ask what grade your son is presently in? Depending on the grade level, I can give a simple or complex explanation. I'll wait for your reply.

Geometric Patterns
Elementary students in grades 3-5 explore patterns as a way of developing algebraic thinking. They identify or build numerical and geometric patterns and represent them using tables and symbols, or use graphs to describe patterns and make predictions. They may use invented notation, standard symbols, or variables to express a pattern. Students learn to analyze the structure of a pattern and how it grows or changes, organize the information systematically, and use the analysis to develop generalizations about the mathematical relations they find.
I hope this helps.
