why are some substances (in particular candle wax and hydrogen gas) insoluble?
It's been a few years since my last chemistry class, but...I believe that it is because water is polar since it has oxygen on one side and then a 120 degree angle between the two hydrogen atoms, which gives it a positive side and a negative side (polar), so if the molecules of another substance are also polar, we know opposites attract due to Coulomb's law, so the molecules will rotate in order to align with the opposite sides of the water molecules, and when all of the molecules of a substance have rotated apart to match the water molecules the original substance will have been broken apart.
