I know this is a late response to chai, but we had the pleasure of seeing the Blind Boys of Alabama at the Rams Head in Annnapolis, Maryland. I remember the lead singer holding a note as he was led around the venue, the crowd went wild. I'd have to look up the date, but I think it may have been as long as 7 years ago. Wow, just wow....what a boatload of listening pleasure.

I've posted this more than once at the site, but if you consider your criterion, this truly fits. First recorded by Gloria Jones in the 60s, and made into a big hit by Soft Cell in the 80s, one of my favorite sing girls (Rolling Eyes), Marilyn Manson completely reworks the song, and the video is truly bizarre, too.

And here's a quicky, the world's only Armenian-American heavy metal band, System of a Down, covers Pink Floyd.

For a truly bizarre musical experience, check out this cover of SoaD's Toxicity by Meytal Cohen, an acoustic-electric violin band. (Meytal is the drummer):

Metal bands just love Livin' la Vida Loca, Ricky Martin's first big English-language hit--this is a cover by Autumn Kings:

Michael Jackson cover by Alien Ant Farm (I know I've posted them elsewhere; they're just so dang bizarre) - with numerous references to MJ and his videos.

This is my kind of thread - don't know how I missed it!

You'll never hear The Seekers 'Georgie Girl' the same way again.

This is very different from the original.

I realise most of you will have never heard the original so here it is.

Lemmy does the vocals, and when he left Hawkwind to form Motorhead they did yet another version, still very similar to Hawkwind's.

@izzythepush,
Mick Farren covering Hawkwind - not overly surprising, next you'll be telling me Michael Moorcock did vocals for them :-)

@hingehead,
Sorry, I thought the only condition was that the cover sounded different to the original. Perhaps you could let us know all the other conditions required before we can post a cover.

@izzythepush,
I thought I'd share an inside joke with you because you thought no-one would know it. Maybe I was wrong to assume you'd know that both Mick Farren and Michael Moorcock wrote SF and had a thing about rock music.

Didn't expect that reaction.

I figured I recognized that name (though never read any of his books) and I do recall Elric and Stormbringer. I was confused about the connection between covers and writers inside joke.
