Are 8 string Guitars overrated?

Do 8 string guitars really ad anything new to music?, apart from djent metal and low tunings used in metal/death core & and alernate tunings for prog fans/musicians and Robert Fripp fanatics. I prefer a 7 string tuned DGCFADG to let me reach higher notes easily because I have short fingers, not all of us have fingers like Steve Vai.
