A dog is always the perfect contrapuntal instrument, a dog's bark signifys a warning, a perception of danger, a threat to one of us. (We always see dogs as one of us or at least we have for the past 100,000 years.)

Other sounds in the distance carry different meanings and feelings:

the crow's caw.

the ta-hoot of the owl

the sound of the turtle heard throughout the land

and then there is this:

"Wait a second, listen."
...

...

"I don't hear anything."
"That's just it, I don't hear anything either. It's quiet."
"But, I...."
"Shhh."
Holding his hand over his own mouth for a moment, Dan moved towards the door slowly, sliding his pistol out of it's holster as he went. He motioned with his hand for us to stay perfectly still, then swung the door wide open. Tippy came racing in and jumped onto the bed, panting and soaking wet.
"Must have been swimming in the tank." said Ma.
"Why you no good mutt, is that why you weren't barking in the distance?"

Tippy laughed a dog laugh and wagged her tail like fury.

Very Happy I don't know. I think that there are better ways of showing danger than relying on one that has become quite a cliché.

Of course you may, Fortune. But do keep them away from where I sleep.

I am fond of "somewhere in the distance, dog bark." This leaves an open-ended question...is it a dogwood tree, or the remains of a dog personified in a literary fashion?

Tell you what's weird...there's a lull in the gale force winds right now and all over the neighborhood dogs are barking like crazy...gives credence to the ominosity angle

know what you mean panz

in fact if I listen hard

yes in the distance, I can just make out the sound of a dog,

probably having sex. With a doggette.
