A runaway tortoise has been reunited with its owners after racing three miles across country - in just over three months.

Herman, a female tortoise more than 30 years old, made her bid for freedom when she escaped from the garden of her home in West Lilburn, near Alnwick at the end of May.

Risking the dangers of the Northumberland countryside she crossed the River Till, avoided being eaten by wild animals or crushed by cars and dined on grass and dandelions. The shelled reptile's dash came to an abrupt end when a passing postman found her on Amerside Moor, near Wooler, last week. Herman was quickly reunited with her owners Ken and Gloria Swanston.

I am happy they got back their beloved family tortoise. Perhaps as the tortois made it's escape the owner tried to catch her but she was too quick?
