I thought I'd start a little thread about my fave group. They made the summer fun and shaped my life. Brian Wilson inspired me to learn the bass and piano and I was told(wrongly) that the bass I'm playing in my avatar was the same one he used on the first two albums.(Its a 1964 Precision and I asked him about it on an online chat)
Got any favorite tunes and memories? Ever see 'em live?
Let me know.
Panz, I don't know if you're familiar with The Four Freshman, but our musician buddy (now dead from pancreatic cancer) gave us a Beach Boys tape that features these guys in an a capella (a la Freshman) group of Christmas carols. I never realized that they were so talented. I like their other stuff, too. Too bad they had such unusual alliances.
Should you like a link, I will provide it, but that would be a bit boring, I'm afraid.
Letty, Brian Wilson was a big fan of The 4F.They shaped the high lead style of the Beach Boys best ballads. Listen to the BB's version of Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring.
Gimme that link!
My God, Panz. I cannot believe that I found someone who knows the Freshman. I ADORE their hearts were full of Spring. Heard the Freshmen in concert, too.
Okay...

This is not exactly what I was looking for, but there is accessible information for you to "do-it-yourself"..that's what I meant by boring.
If The BB's sound anything like the Freshmen, admiration just went up another notch.
They sing as sweetly no doubt...especially their version of Graduation Day which i still sing to this day. I saw the 4F in concert and they were awesome. I've collected most of their 45's and ep's.
In the beginning: Brian Wilson is number 51 on the Hawthorne High School football team.

... and I know that section is nowhere near being complete.
I also like Fun Fun Fun, it's a bit of a portrayal of teen life before things got violent and really scary - just some gal partying and then suffering a small consequence when her life is found out by her father.
Since "Deadman's Curve" seems to be in heavy rotation on cable, I keep watching bits and pieces of it (it's the Jan and Dean story), so I'm making an effort to not confuse the two. Surf City and The Little Old Lady from Pasadena are J & D songs, for example.
Be True To Your School
When some loud braggart tries to put me down
And says his school is great
I tell him right away
Now what's the matter buddy
Ain't you heard of my school
It's number one in the state
So be true to your school now
Just like you would to your girl or guy
Be true to your school now
And let your colors fly
Be true to your school
I got a letterman's sweater
With a letter in front
I got for footbal and track
I'm proud to where it now
When I cruise around
The other parts of the town
I got a decal in back
So be true to your school now
Just like you would to your girl or guy
Be true to your school now
And let your colors fly
Be true to your school
On friday we'll be jacked up on the football game
And I'll be ready to fight
We're gonna smash 'em now
My girl will be working on her pom-poms now
And she'll be yelling tonight
So be true to your school now
Just like you would to your girl or guy
Be true to your school now
And let your colors fly
Be true to your school
Rah rah rah be true to your school
Rah rah rah be true to your school
Rah rah rah be true to your school
Rah rah rah be true to your school
Yeah Jespah, Jan and Dean had a symbiotic relationship with Brian Wilson. They would write together and sing on each others records. Dead Man's Curve is a compelling story. Life sometimes imitates fiction.
No wonder the sounds are so similar.
Yeah, Dead Man's Curve, man, what a horrible accident.
She's real fine my 409
She's real fine my 409
My 409
Well I saved my pennies and I saved my dimes
(giddy up giddy up 409)
For I knew there would be a time
(giddy up giddy up 409)
When I would buy a brand new 409
(409, 409)
Giddy up giddy up giddy up 409
(giddy up giddy up 409)
Giddy up 409
(giddy up giddy up 409)
Giddy up 409
(giddy up giddy up 409)
Giddy up 40...
Nothing can catch her
Nothing can touch my 409
409 ooooo
(giddy up giddy up oooo)
(giddy up giddy up oooo)
(giddy up giddy up oooo)
(giddy up giddy up)
When I take her to the track she really shines
(giddy up giddy up 409)
She always turns in the fastest times
(giddy up giddy up 409)
My four speed dual quad posi-traction 409
(409, 409, 409, 409)
Giddy up giddy up giddy up 409
(giddy up giddy up 409)
Giddy up 409
(giddy up giddy up 409)
Giddy up 409
(giddy up giddy up 409)
Giddy up 40...
Nothing can catch her
Nothing can touch my 409
(409 409 409 409)
Giddy up 409
(409 409 409 409)
Giddy up 409
(409 409 409 409)
When i was in high school, JD's (juvenile deliquents) would steal the "409" flags off Chevy's to resell or to put on their own Chevy. Anybody who knows what this means was there; those who don't understand what i'm talking about don't know what a 409 is, or what the flags were, and wa'n't there . . .
Kewl Set, the BB's drag songs got me into cars.I'll let someone else fill us in on the 409 although I was a Chevy fanatic.
396 flags became the object of vandalism after the 409 was discontinued. Great muscle engine . . .
Well I'm not braggin' babe so don't put me down
But I've got the fastest set of wheels in town
When something comes up to me he don't even try
Cause if I had a set of wings man I know she could fly
She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got
(My little deuce coupe)
(You don't know what I got)
Just a little deuce coupe with a flat head mill
But she'll walk a Thunderbird like (shes) it's standin' still
She's ported and relieved and she's stroked and bored.
She'll do a hundred and forty with the top end floored
She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got
(My little deuce coupe)
(You don't know what I got)
She's got a competition clutch with the four on the floor
And she purrs like a kitten till the lake pipes roar
And if that aint enough to make you flip your lid
There's one more thing, I got the pink slip daddy
And comin' off the line when the light turns green
Well she blows 'em outta the water like you never seen
I get pushed out of shape and it's hard to steer
When I get rubber in all four gears
She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got
(My little deuce coupe)
(You don't know what I got)
She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got
(My little deuce coupe)
(You don't know what I got)
She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got
Wow! Jes. Is that what the A2K tool bar is all about?
I spoke of strange alliances, and I'm certain you know of Dennis Wilson's involvement with Charles Manson. Do believe the Beatles' White Album was connected in someway to that horror.

There's a story told of a very gentle boy
And the girl who wore his ring
Through the wintry snow
The world they knew was one
For their hearts were full of spring
As the days grew old
And the nights passed into time
And the weeks and years took wing (was, "wind")
Gentle boy, tender girl
Their love remained still young
For their hearts were full of spring
Then one day they died
And their graves were side by side
On a hill where robins sing
And they say violets
Grow there the whole year round
For their hearts were full of spring
I'll leave the rest of the info here if anyone cares about checking it out.
I smiled (a little) when I thought about SCoates question asking about the origin of "car"..then here was Panz with The Beach Boys; and both my cars are on the fritz. Sheeeeeeeeze.

What a lovely song, thanks.
The BB's took this song and changed it to one about James Dean...let me rummage.
Now a young man's gone
But his legend lingers on
For so much had he to give
But his life is through
For the story told is true
For he died just as he lived.
For this daring young star
Met his death while in his car
No one knows the reason why
Screaming tire, flashing fire
And gone was this young star
Oh how could they let him die
Still a young man is gone
Yet his legend lingers on
For he died without a cause
And they say that he'll
Be known for evermore
As the Rebel Without A Cause
It's the little old lady from Pasadena
It's the little old lady from Pasadena
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
Got a pretty little flower bed of white gardenias
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
But parked in her rickety old garage
Is a brand new shiny red super-stock dodge
And everybody's saying there's nobody meaner
Than the little old lady from Pasadena
She drives real fast and she drives real hard
She's a terror out on Colorado Boulevard
It's the little old lady from Pasadena
You can see her on the street just gettin' her kicks now
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
With her four speed stick and her four-twenty-six now
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
She's gonna get a ticket now sooner or later
'cause she can't keep her foot off the accelerator
And everybody's saying there's nobody meaner
Than the little old lady from Pasadena
She drives real fast and she drives real hard
She's a terror out on Colorado Boulevard
And everybody's saying there's nobody meaner
Than the little old lady from Pasadena
She drives real fast and she drives real hard
She's a terror out on Colorado Boulevard
It's the little old lady from Pasadena
If you see her on the street don't try to choose her
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
You may have a goer but you'll never lose her
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
The guys come to race her from miles around
But she'll give 'em a length and she'll shut 'em down
And everybody's saying there's nobody meaner
Than the little old lady from Pasadena
She drives real fast and she drives real hard
She's a terror out on Colorado Boulevard
It's the little old lady from pasadena
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
Granny go
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
Granny go
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
Granny go
Go granny, go granny, go granny go
Granny go
We used to listen to the Beach Boys on my brother's eight-track in his Corvair--unsafe at any speed.
Looks like my neighbors Charger. We had a 'Cuda, a 67 and felt much superior.
That's a '66 Charger . . . i figured that was about the right year, and assuming a 426 Hemi with Holley dual quads, i'd say that makes for a Shiny Red Superstock Dodge . . .
