WEST BEND, Wis. - An arctic fox that a woman bought as a pet created a stink for neighbors who tipped police about an exotic animal in their apartment complex.

The fox was being kept in a cage in the basement of the apartment building, and some described the smell as similar to rotten eggs.

Conservation warden Bill Mitchell said there are a number of reasons why the arctic fox, which is not native to Wisconsin, doesn't make a good house pet.

"They have a high-pitched yip, plus their urine is pretty offensive. It's like a skunk," Mitchell said.

Acting on the tip, police officers confiscated the 6-year-old male fox Wednesday.

Nicole Budzinski, 21, was issued a $145 city citation for harboring an exotic animal.

She told officers she purchased the fox some time ago, police Lt. Dave Rettler said.

Mitchell, a warden with the Department of Natural Resources, said the fox would go to a licensed facility that handles such animals. It appeared to be in good health.

Just another example of someone who doesn't know what they're getting into when taking in "wild" animals and trying to domesticate them!! She may not have caused intentional suffering to the animal, but even a domestic dog is not happy when kept in a cage in a basement. Perhaps if the fines were larger and punishment more severe then people would stop and think. I wonder if she knew the habits of the animal, and what she thought people were gonna think about the stench? A small animal rehab is nearby my home and they have arctic fox, and believe me they dooooooo smell as bad as a skunk. How could she not have realized that it would draw people's attention??? Oh well, the fox will be happier once it is sent to a permanent home for wild animals.

I agree! People should be more aware that an animal is not automatically a pet.

And welcome to A2K tikarain!
