HARARE (AFP) - Sixty Zimbabwean youths began a bid to dance their way into the Guinness Book of Records by staging what they hope will be the world's longest dance party, an AFP reporter witnessed.
The dancers, who started partying at 7:00 pm (1700 GMT) were led by the current holder of the Guinness world record for the longest lecture, Zimbabwe's 20-year-old Errol Muzawazi.
"We are chasing a record that was set in Ohio, in the United States of America, which was 52 hours and three minutes," Muzawazi told AFP.
"We want to dance for a hundred hours, so our determination is not just to break the record, but also to be able to consolidate (it)," said Muzawazi, who is studying for a law degree in Poland.
He said he wanted the dance party to raise money to combat HIV/AIDS in Africa.
The dance marathon, which is taking place in a central Harare park, is due to end Monday at 23:00 (21:00 GMT). It will be monitored by independent witnesses, said Muzawazi.
Each of the dancers will get a 10 minute break every hour, while the group will rest for 15 minutes every eight hours.
To qualify, three quarters of the youths have to finish the dance.
Muzawazi's world record-breaking lecture, which he gave in Poland last year, lasted for 62 hours and 30 minutes.
