BEIJING (Reuters) - China is breeding new flowers and putting them through rigorous tests to see if they can go the distance and bloom throughout the hot, humid summer in time for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Horticulturists will choose some of the flowers to be put on trial around the city to evaluate their marathon performance, the China Daily on Monday quoted researcher Zhang Lannian as saying.
"The most important criterion for choosing the flowers is whether they can bloom between July and September when the 2008 Games are expected to be held," he said.
About five million pots of flowers would be planted in gardens and along city streets over the next couple of years to test their staying power.
"A three-year evaluation period of the flowers' performance is needed before the final decision of what kinds of flowers will be used during the Olympics," the newspaper said.
