Hi,
I was looking for a poem I had when my children were small and had reason to want to find it for my daughter who now has a 4 yr. old boy starting school this year and 1 yr. twin girls.( She's having a very tough time as he has never even been left with a baby sitter!!)
Anyway, while searching for it I saw some one on this sight has it mounted on their mantle.
If it's not too much trouble, PLEASE tell me the title or Author.
I believe it starts out:
speak to me of children and he said,
your children are not your children..........it goes on to say we as parents are the archers and the children are the arrows????
It's been a long time since I've seen it.

Thanks so much,

Children by Kahlil Gibran

And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, 'Speak to us of Children.'

And he said:

Your children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,

And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts.

For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls,

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.

For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.

Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;

For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.

poem about children
It is by the Lebanese poet and philosopher Khalil Gibran and is one of a series of essays put together into a book called 'The Prophet'. I've seen it kicking around in plenty of book stories quite recently so it shouldn't be hard to get hold of. It'll probably be in the religion section. Good Luck! It is a really brilliant, inspirational read.
