In fact, this is Bobby Darin on the recording, not Sam Cooke

I never understood why Sam Phillips got Charlie Rich to play piano for Jerry Lee Lewis on some recordings, this one for instance.

Joan Baez appears in state capitol to remember Los Gatos Canyon plane crash victims
Baez recorded a version of Woody Guthrie’s song “Deportee,” inspired by the incident, which was California’s deadliest plane crash at the time.
The Mexican passengers, who were being flown from Oakland to El Centro for deportation, died along with three crew members and an immigration official. The Mexicans were buried in a mass grave at Holy Cross Cemetery in west central Fresno with no headstone or marking.
Tim Z. Hernández, a Dinuba native, was curious about Guthrie’s song while doing research for an earlier book. It led to a five-year search for the names of the Mexican victims and later their families. Last year, he released the book “All They Will Call You” in which some of the victims’ stories are told. http://www.fresnobee.com/news/local/article197322904.html

It appears that the pilot, who was inexperienced on flying with instruments, misread the dials and instead of climbing he started descending. In the darkness and the conditions, with no real horizon visible, there is only the plane’s artificial horizon to depend on. The plane crashed 5 minutes later on farmland belong to Albert Juel.
It was not until 5 am that an alert was issued for the missing plane and not until 9 am the next morning that the owner of Dwyer Aviation, flying his own plane and searching for any wreckage, spotted the crash site. All four men had died instantly and despite subsequent conspiracy theories that include Buddy forcing the pilot to hand over the controls, at gun point, there is little doubt that it was just a tragic accident.
