Can someone offer an easier explanation of annual deer antler development?

We're studying circadian rhythms in class. I'm having a hard time grasping how photoperiod & hormones regulate Antler development. Any wildlife biologists out there??

Me, I read an interesting book not long ago that did involve deer and antlers:

This Night's Foul Work, by Fred Vargas.
My paperback had antlers on the cover..
