Vomit, fish and stale milk are among the worst pongs revealed in survey of British drivers' cars.

Nearly 75% of motorists admitted their vehicle was home to an unseemly smell.

Most common was the odour of fast food and takeaways as was the aroma of stale cigarettes.

Almost a third of women, but just 8% of men, complained about the nasal damage inflicted by scents from their children and vomit.

Men were twice as likely as women to admit their car contained the whiff of sports bags and sweaty socks.

They also moaned more about the smell from animals, 12% against 6% of women, found the survey by car car firm Comma.

Spokesman Mike Bewsey said: "Unpleasant odours can easily gather in a vehicle, making it a less than fragrant journey.

"However, even we were surprised by how many motorists admit to driving around in smelly vehicles."

The top five most common smells in cars were:

Men
Food (fast food and takeaways) 19%
Fumes 17%
Cigarette smoke 15%
Animals 12%
Body odour 12%

Women
Food (fast food and takeaways) 28%
Children 22%
Cigarette smoke 17%
Fumes 11%
Animals 6%
