(I haven't actually gotten around to reading much of Northern Lights, but I believe it is about a war veteran of some kind. Nuclear Age, though, I have a read at least a couple times, and it is about a man entirely terrified by nuclear fallout.)

Aviator in Alaska, winter '70, night flying at angels 25 (25,000 ft), the aurora started to luminesce and became so vibrant that I felt awed in the presence of it. It was as if I was surrounded by the pulsing curtains.
Oh, yeah. Second place in war is the pits.
