Advantage of being a director?

Is there any financial or legal advantage of being a director of a company?

We are talking about going public and am curious if there are any extra levels of protection to shareholders if they are directors of a company or additional securities. I am aware of the potential cons of being a director. Even if we stay private, would like to know implications to a given shareholder if they are a director and if they are not.
