Highlight or full color for short hair

I just got a pixie and the back of my hair is too short to pull through a cap or to foil. Should I have it colored if I have fast growing hair? My hair is naturally medium brown and highlight it light blonde. Will it grow out too fast for all over color? I have never had anything but highlights.
