Lemons go to waste in war on terror

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Five shipping containers of lemons rotted on a ship held off New York all week after officials received a false tip amid heightened security that the cargo might be biologically contaminated, the U.S. Coast Guard says.

The Coast Guard said in a statement on Friday it boarded the container ship CSAV Rio Puelo on Saturday after being told by the U.S. Department of Agriculture of an "unconfirmed anonymous report" that one container of lemons had an "unknown harmful biological substance."

Officials tested the cargo for biological hazards, but none was found, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

It was not immediately known how many pounds of lemons were spoiled, but CSAVGroup, the shipping container firm that owns the ship, said the containers can hold up hold up to 40,000 pounds (18 tonnes) of produce apiece. They declined to say how much money had been lost and whether insurance would pick up the cost.

"The lemons will be destroyed because they are no good after sitting at sea for a week," Coast Guard spokesman Jim McGranachan said.

The Marshall Islands-flagged ship, which was delivering the lemons from South America, was escorted from an anchorage off New York into the neighbouring port of Newark, New Jersey on Friday, the spokesman said.

With U.S. government warnings of a possible attack by Islamic militants in the run up to the November presidential election and new maritime security measures that came into force last month, officials are taking extra precautions.

Rear Admiral David Pekoske, the Coast Guard commander for the area, said the agency was "responding to this situation with the utmost care to ensure a safe and secure resolution."

Hey, Col! (I'm back)

Interesting story; the war administrators have the weirdest ways of spending money. I mean, we have soldiers needing to borrow boots from off duty ones, and yet they are blowing money on lemons that are subsequently being wasted. Who eats a lemon whole? -- not many. And it's not as if the soldiers are carrying little fruiting machines with them, is it?

O, I'll go check for it right away, Col!

Helsinki was just beautiful, though I think that I would have preferred it much more in Winter. I will definitely go back. I spent a bit of time in Russia, but I was called back to eulogise at a funeral of a relative whom I hardly met by relatives whom I've hardly met. In Woking, of all places. But, I'm back on the road now; I'm just thinking about whether I should go to Paris now, or whether I should wait for that, and do something mad like... fly to Iceland. I always wanted to speak Icelandic. I always wanted to speak too many damn languages, and have not enough time..

Hay dròm_et_rêve, you didn't tell me you were traveling to Helsinki, and Russia and all those places! I mean, I know you are planning to emigrate to Armenia (right?), but it seems you are a real worldtraveler!

Hey, Rick! Did I not? Yes, I have been travelling around for quite some time, writing, watching, walking about aimlessly and sleeping on trains.. it's been great. (What's even better is that my huge internet bills are being paid for too..)

(What Icelandic food are you eating, Col?)

You know, we should start up an A2K travelling fund. Get a bus and drive from London to Laos or somewhere; or from... say... Alaska down the west side of the Americas to the bottom of Chile, up through the East side, if you see what I mean . If we get thirty people going, and sleep on the bus, the cost would be far cheaper than otherwise.

Great idea about the traveling part dròm_et_rêve! Actually I could have known you are a traveller (looking at your location... Rolling Eyes ). It seems so exciting to travel the world, meet and experience other cultures (which explains my choice to study Antropology), not the cultures of the Western world (although they can be pretty exciting too of course), but Asia, Africa, Latin America! I have this plan to learn Russian and travel through the former Soviet Union in a couple of years. But first I should focus on my study, which is almost starting, and earn some more money (I don't have any sponsors)!

well rick...... the more i travel..the more i see people are the same all over
sure theres cultural difference and genetic difference n all that but everyone laughs n cries n experiences similar things
every country ive been to ive seen rich and poor, open minded people and narrow minded people
people in love, people in hate
plus theres all the great sights too
the best thing about travelling for me is when i get back i can really see how ignorant a lot of people are about 'the outside world'
its so different to what you see on the news...

i like the travelling idea drom but i think i prefer to travel alone, its what ive always done and it allows me what i most want in life which is freedom to go and do what i like

it wasnt icelandic food i was eating drom it was old el paso tacos of all things Wink and it just so happens that the same ones we get here they also sell in iceland...
