Changing lifestyles over the past decade have seen greengrocers and butchers replaced by aromatherapists and mobile phones.
Analysis of companies advertising in telephone directories shows a decline in traditional high street shops yet a big rise in businesses catering for personal fulfilment.
Among new categories to emerge over the 10 years covered by the study are practitioners in the Japanese healing art of Shiatsu, along with nutritionists, yoga and farm shops.
