Some Rantings About E Mails

Reply Wed 15 Jan, 2003 02:46 pm
The thing that I cannot stand about E Mails are attachments. I know that sometimes it is unavoidable, but I make it my business NOT to send attachments 99.9% of the time.

I just blew away a whole buch of jokes from a friend of mine, who sends good jokes. Why? Because she sent them all as attachments. If I want to see them, I have to save the E Mail to disc, and then virus scan them before I open them. It is a total pain in the butt.

On a few occasions people have sent me E Mails that were a forward of a forward attachment, and then I would have to virus scan twice. Fugggataboutit! If I have to go to so much trouble, it is not worth seeing.

My other gripe is people who send E Mails with the addresses of anybody who has sent them before. I make it my business to clean up all the extraneous stuff before I send it around. Also, If I am sending something to more than one person, unless they all know one another, I send it BCC.

Another thing, I detest getting E Mails with all the >> (whatever they are called.) I always clean mine up.

In addition, I hate E Mails where people do not create paragraphs in their message, and send it as one huge block Evil or Very Mad.

Anybody else have any gripes about E Mails?

My preference is for email with a message in it. Am I expected to reply to jokes and ecards without comments? I don't. Hope nobody thinks I'm being rude.

roger- I don't mind a REASONABLE amount of jokes, if they are really funny, or clever. I have a neighbor whose wife's first husband (deceased) was a career military officer. The second husband, seemed to like to trail on his predecessors coattails.

Every day I would get mail that was really only of interest to military officers, both present and retired. And they were long, very politically oriented and involved. I finally put my foot down, and now he sends me nothing. Crying or Very sad

I share most of those annoyances.

I particularly dislike e-mail chain letters. "send this e-mail to five other people and you will have good luck..." Are all my acquaintances complete idiots?

There is a special corner in hell for spammers who return-address their spam with random names. "Hi remember me? - from:Nancy Johnson" You open it up and it is an ad for Spaghetti-O's.

I once had a friend send me an E Mail about something that I knew was an urban legend. I sent her a link to the Snopes site, with a very nice note. As she had listed all her E Mail recipients, I knew that she had sent this misinformation to a lot of people.

Instead of being happy that I had pointed out in inaccuracy in what she was sending out to most of the immediate world, she got very defensive. When I explained to her that even if the information is not harmful, a lot of people sending it out clogs up the internet. She got very pissed off, and said that she did not care if it was true or not! Confused

spam sucks, if I don't recognize the sender or the description - delete!

SPAM? FUGGAGEDABOUDIT! I don't even bother to look. Just click "delete". Early on, when I first clicked on my computer E Mail, I found myself in a porno site. Never again!

Yes, the tactics now used by spammers have gotten ever more ingenious. One of my recent faves starts like this: "You may not remember me. I was that skinny kid in junior high who was always cadging other kids' milk money..." No lie. It goes on and on to such an extent that I can't even remember the point of it.

Not, mind you, that I generally read spam...

Thanks, Bill. I also like the ones from Nigeria, written in broken English, promising a share of many millions if I can help the sender regain the huge fortune that's somehow waiting for us if I'd only send some confidential financial information.

Somehow seems a bit unsound as an investment, but I'm not sure why...

What an interesting euphemism. I've never seen them referred to as Spaghetti-Os.

I deal with a bunch of e-mail daily, and often share attachments among colleagues and collaborators. A rule we all follow is to preceed any attachment-laden e-mail with a brief notice to each intended recipient that an attachment and commentary will follow separately. I will not open a previously unannounced attachment.

I use a couple of public e-mail portals which I constantly weed for SPAM, and tightly guard the existence of a purely personal e-mail address, which receives virtually no irrelevant or unwanted communication. I have an e-mail filter set up to deal with forwards. I am rarely bothered by Nigerians, gullible perpetuators of hoaxes, or members of The Joke of Last Week Club

Phoenix, isn't that irritating when a) people send you a hoax and b) they get huffy when you point that out? I understand that it makes them look foolish or whatever, but my sympathy runs out after the 3rd or 4th time the same person sends on a hoax.

However, I've stopped doing it with most people, and try to do it only if it contains false "medical" information. (Underarm deodorant has been proven to cause breast cancer, etc.)

Ads for Bust Enhancement schemes are pretty much wasted on me.
Thety do seem to be typically more attractively and imagineatively illustrated than are the ads for potions which promise frustrated males Taurean Size and Priapic Vigor, though. The success of the market for sexual remedies gives me wonder that we manage to breed unaided at all.

I got that one Eve, I was highly amused as well.
I hate it when the whole travel history of the forwarded email-anything is viewed before you get to the guts of it. The worst part is when it gets sent around from person to person, the more it collects.
Then ex-boyfriend sees your address, knows it could be you and sends you an email saying 'Hey wanna catch up sometime, it will be good to see you?' Really!!!!!!I never want to see you again!!!
And then before you know it, youre on his email list and hes sending them to you everyday.
Doesnt he remember my reason for ridding my life of him???? Evil or Very Mad

This is great! I found a site where a man responded to the Nigerian e-mails, and corrsponded back and forth with the people, who believed he was serious for quite a while. I'll see if I still have the link around. You'll get a kick out of it!
